NOTABLE ACCOMPLISHMENTS
These Friars didn’t score a lot but they didn’t have to. Their defense was stellar all year, pitching 4 shutouts and only giving up 4.6 points a game. Only one team scored more than one TD against them ( MP History- Tops in Team- The Touchdown Club). 3rd ranked defense all time. The other team cannot win if they cannot score and Malvern’s opponents in 1985 could not score. 10 points separated them from an undefeated season. That is a very good year.
MP only needed 2 TDs and 1FG from Kirk to best the Cadets of Valley Forge. Paul Simpson started off the scoring season right with a 5 yard score. The Friars went 75 on this drive which included a chunk run of 34 yards by Dilenno. A Dave Rogers fumble recovery set up Tony Dilenno for the 2nd score. Kirk’s FG was good from 22 yards out.
The Kirk brothers got 10 of the 28 against GA. Kelly with the TD and Ken with 4 extra points. Mike Augsberger did his thing with 3 TDs in the shutout win.
Malvern came out on top of the usually tough St. Marks of Delaware 15-8. St. Marks was always a good test for the Friars. It was scoreless at half and the Friars actually trailed 8-7 going into the 4th. The defense held strong and one more Augsberger scamper for 35 yards provided the margin of victory. Dave Boreanaz’s 2 point catch provided a needed cushion.
MP jumped on top of Haverford 10-0 in the 1st Q and didn’t look back. It was alittle bit of a GA replay as Augsberger scored from 23, 19 and 6. Kelly Kirk added a FG. 2nd drive was 8 plays and 55 yards. Key play in the drive was a 20 reception from Augsberger to Boreanaz.
1985 produced a very good Penn Charter team that was poised to win the Inter-Ac. The were loaded, with 10 starters back on D. This was one of the few times that an IA opponent was bigger upfront than Malvern. The Friars only score was set up off a fumble recovery by Mike Schlichtig on the opening kick-off. Kelly Kirk scored from 8 n brother Ken added the point after. From there, it was the Malvern D that came up big, time and time again. Four times Penn Charter got inside the Friar 30 but Dave, Rogers, Chris Treston and Charlie Antell led a defense that held firm. This was a game when a tie kind of felt like a win. Kely Kirk led the Friars with a well-earned 67 yards on the ground. To say PC came away very disappointed would be an understatement. This was their year to take it all and then it wasn’t.
The EA game was no breather for the blue and silver. It was a street fight with another Inter-Ac opponent. It was 0-0 at half. Malvern scored on the opening drive of the 2nd half. It was an 11 play 57 yard score. Kelly Kirk carried 5 times for 21 yards on the drive. Augsberger did the honor with a 1 yd plunge. On the day he totaled 152 yards of offense- 88 run and 64 pass. Late in the 4thQ, the defense salted the game away and preserved their 2nd shutout with a stop from 4th and inches at the 10 yard line.
It is always a challenge to take long road trips and play well. I call it “bus legs”. I felt that it took a team a longer amount of time to get in rhythm after a long bus ride. And let’s face it, those buses were no-where near comfortable. MP travelled by bus to Calvert Hall in Maryland. They go off the bus, controlled the game, pitched another shutout, got back on the bus and went home. 1st score was one play. It was a quick 60 yard strike for Augsberger to Dimeler. Augs got the 2nd score, Ken Kirk added two, and the defense did their usual thing. Calvert Hall did not get into the redzone until the last minute of play… and still didn’t score. Shutout #3 and a back to back.
Buena was next up and the Friars exploded for 46. Seven different players scored when the TD spigot was turned on. On offense, Kirk, Antell, Augsberger, Pauly, White and Rich Liberatore contributed 6 TDs. On defense, it was only fitting that they added a touchdown with a 38 yard pick six by Rob Risnychok. Buena came in as a struggling team and MP make sure that didn’t change as it was 33-0 at half. The big boys upfront road graded for 225 rushing yards.
It was fitting ending to the 1985 season as the Friars beat Carroll 6-0 on Thanksgiving. On a soggy day, it was Malvern’s second straight in the Friar-Pat bowl. It was also an indirect revenge win as Carroll had beaten Bonner by a 14-3 score. With the win MP moved to 5-1 all-time versus Carroll. Kelly Kirks 4 yard run in the 2nd Q held up all game long. The defense might have had something to do with that. Carroll had 45 rushing attempts for 84 yards and totaled only 149 total yards on 69 plays in the contest. Those numbers don’t get you very far. The game and the season would not be complete if the defense didn’t have another goal line stand to ice it. Carroll had 4 shots from the 5 yard line and could not convert. Three run attempts and 1 pass were thwarted by the Friar 11. Game, set, match and season ended on an up note. One heck of a year and why not end it on Thanksgiving with a shutout!
