NOTABLE ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Our 1st victory in football came in the game with Wilmington Friends School. Wilmington Friends had a much lighter team than ours, but fought gamely to the end. A neat drop-kick in the final period saved them from a shutout.

On November 6th, we defeated St. Matthews High of Conshohocken, on our own field 19-0.

Although it was a loss I had to include this summary of the Newman game.

The big game of the season, that with Newman, was a colorful one. The Villanova College band was there to inspire Villanova’s youthful offspring to live up to the traditions of its fostering mother. (yes, these were the exact words taken directly from the yearbook). And there was also a large cheering staff on hand. But the best we could do was reduce last year’s score (65-0) and hold Newman to a 13-0 victory. I guess you could file this game under a "moral victory".

Another first for 1925 was the formation of a JV squad. From the yearbook "the course of training and the schedule was necessarily less intensive because of the less rugged constitution of the younger boys. To hold their interest a three game schedule was arranged. Numbered among the stars of the team were Sam Castner, Francis Horstmann (my uncle), Frank McDevitt, Cornelius McGarity, Herman O’Bert, John McMahon, Robert Gilson, Arthur Barry, Tom Gallagher, Laurence Egan, and George Anacona."
