NOTABLE ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Graduation for the 1980 team hit the Friars hard in key spots, but the 1981 team never gave up the fight. They started slow. Ronn Kinn’s 4 TDs in the 1st 3 games were not enough to get the Friars into the win column. However, they might have found a new specials team weapon as Jeff Hasso connected on a 25 yard field goal in the Williamson Trade contest. They lost to a pretty good Willaimson Trade team 27-16 who also beat Penn Charter 29-18.

Friars got the 1st win of the season by besting the always tough St. Marks of Delaware. Gamp and the staff made a switch of Andy Baker from DB to RB. Andy responded to the challenge by rushing 13x for 86 yards and a TD. Matt Taylor doubled up with a rushing and passing TD. The run was from 4 yards out. His TD pass went to reliable receiver Jim Pitt. The defense held firm with interceptions by Terry Pitt and Mike Devine and a fumble recovery by Jim D’Anjolell.

Malvern blanked Haverford School for the second year in a row with a solid 27-0 win. Mike Laino did the offensive damage runs of 4, 9, and 3 yards. The game was scoreless at half but the Friars pushed through with 2 TDs in the 3rdQ and 4thQ. It was easy to see why Mike Ciesielski was all Inter-Ac on defense as he had a stat filled, dominating day-10 tackles, 1 interception, 2 fumble recoveries and 2 sacks. No wonder Haverford School did not score.

New weapon Jeff Hasso’s 22 yard FG stood up until 17 seconds left in the game. Mike Laino bulled over from 14 yards out as MP squeaked by GA 10-0.

Malvern had a very, I think I have been here before, déjà vu moment against Penn Charter. This time they flipped the script. Mike Laino scored from 4 yards out and this time Jeff Hasso kicked the FG with 3 seconds left in the half. Laino had 21 carries for 71 very tough yards. On defense it was Terry Pitt’s turn to step up and he picked off 3 passes on the day. This marked Malvern’s 13th win in a row against Penn Charter.

Matt Taylor’s pass to Jim Pitt wasn’t enough in a 13-6 loss to Episcopal. The Malvern defense gave it their best shot holding all everything EA running back Chris Flynn to 90 yards on 19 carries.

As they always seem to do, the Friars ended the season on an up note by beating Bishop Eustace 14-8. Matt Taylor had a hand in both scores. A TD pass to Andy Baker and a 10 yard run. Jeff Hasso added the 2 extra points.

Terry Pitt tied the school record of 7 interceptions on the season.
