NOTABLE ACCOMPLISHMENTS
The 1984 Friars started slow but finished with a flurry. Dropped the 1st 2 in tight losses to V.F.M.A and Friar rival Bonner, then rattled off 8 straight and another IA title.
At the numbers game again. Lost their 1st two by only giving up 14 in each game then score exactly 23 points in the next 3 games that resulted in 3 wins.
1st win if the year was strong statement against Academy Park who was ranked #5 in SEPA. Academy Park was 3-0 coming into the game and had only given up 21 points. In the next man up scenario, Mike Augsberger subbed for an injured Billy Lockart. All Mike did was score twice. Friars led at half 3-0 on a Rose 23 yd FG. They scored three times in the 4th to secure the win. Dennis Morgan had the other tally on a 22 yard run. The Friar fatties up front rolled to 361 yards on the ground. Have to appreciate the big boys who make it happen.
In a 23-13 win, Lockhart and Stan Brown were double trouble for St. Marks of Delaware. Stan had 1 TD and 178 yards rushing. Bill had 114 yards on 12 carries. Rose had a busy day with a TD, a FG and an extra point.
The Friars finished the 23 point streak with a 23-0 whitewash of Glenn Mills. Lockhart went short with a 1 yard run and Paul Simpson went long with a 73 yard burst. MP was in control at half, up 16-0. 4th game in a row that Mike Rose added a FG.
The first IA contest of the year was a down to the wire, edge of your seat kind of game. The Friars came out of it “smelling like a rose”. Okay, I had to throw that in! It was Mike Rose’s 26 yard field goal with 1:49 left in the game that sealed the deal. Stan Brown led the day with 134 yards. Dennis Morgan added another tough 49. The difference maker was a Jim DeAngelis and Dennis Morgan stuff of Penn Charter RB P.J. Maley on 4th and inches on the 28. Dennis and Billy accounted for the 2 TDs. Game was deadlocked at half 7-7.
I don’t track it, but in doing the team page reserch, off the top of my head, I don’t know of any other kicker having a FG in five consecutive games. None bigger than the PC win. Well done Mike!
The Blue and Silver routed EA 34-7 in their next IA contest. It was 27-0 at half and 34-0 before EA scored against the reserves. When the paper recognizes the big skill up front I have to highlight it too. Big skill Jim Lynch, Rob Verratti, Bob Miller, Dave Rogers, and Joe Dellavechia led the offense to 515 total yards on the day. Lockhart had 136 yards and 3 TDs, Brown 87 yards and a TD, Dennis Morgan closed out this event with 74 yards and 1 TD. Big revenge game, in style, as they snapped a 3 year skid against EA.
The team came out on top of another IA dog fight with a 15-14 win over Haverford. MP trailed 8-7 at half, with Lockhart getting the lone Friar score. Malvern came out strong on the 1st drive of the 2nd half with an 11 play statement and another score by Lockhart. The Friars got the necessary 2 point conversion on a Stan Brown run. It got interesting when Haverford scored with 50 seconds left. The Ford went for the win with a 2 point attempt but the Friars held on.
So, in the IA the Friars go tight game, blow out, tight game. Must mean the next game has to be a blow out? They got it right, 48-14 over GA. Star of the game was receiver John Rogers who antagonized GA with 3 TDs catches from QB Bill Lockhart. The game was an offensive bonanza for the team. It looked like this- Rogers 3 catches 3 TDS, Brown 107 yards 1TD, Morgan 114 yards 1 TD, Lockhart 87 rush and 122 passing with 3TDs. Paul Simpson and Kelly Kirk finished off the damage with one score each.
It was Malvern’s 4th title since 1978. They outscored their IA opponents 123-49 in the 4 game sweep.
The 1st annual “Friar-Pat” had the makings of a classic and it did not disappoint. Two regular season champions were competing on Thanksgiving for top bragging rights. Carroll was #1 and Catholic South champs and Malvern #2 and IA champs in Ted Silary’s City Top 10. If you were a fan of high school football this game was a keeper. A Rogers TD catch opened the scoring in the 1st, Carroll led at half-time 7-6, Malvern back on top 12-7 on a Morgan 13 yard run in the 3rd, Carroll rallied to take a 15-12 lead with 4:32 left in the game, Billy Lockhart wins it with a 1 yard plunge at 2:34. Charlie Antell provided the final heroics with a pick at 1:32 for the final nail. Yes, it was that good! The Friars rumbled for 340 of total offense. Morgan had 92 and Brown 73 of the ground and pound yards. Great way to end the year.
Bill Lockhart finished 10th in scoring in the area.
Malvern finished #1 in Ted Silary’s City Top 10. V.F.M.A finished 8-1. Their only loss was to Penn Charter 26-24. Carroll finished 2nd, Bonner finished 5th and Penn Charter 9th. Another tough schedule in the books.
