Salesianum  22  Malvern Friars  15  (OT)      October 6, 2006

At Baynard Stadium, Wilmington, Delaware

By Gerry McKee and John Ostick, Parents Booster Club

The Malvern Prep Friars traveled to Wilmington Delaware on Friday evening for a game under the lights against the Sallies of Salesianum High School. The Sallies are a very formidable opponent, being previously undefeated and the number one ranked team in the state of Delaware. They are led by a Penn State recruit, Andrew Szczerba, a 6-6, 250-pound tight end-defensive end. They boast of good size all across their offensive and defensive fronts, which have produced a solid ground game on offense and a penetrating, high pressure defense.

The Sallies gained the field position advantage by late in a scoreless first quarter, moving  the ball to the four yard line after a 25 yard pass completion to their tight end #89  Andrew Szczerba. With a first and goal at the four yard line, the Friar defense faced its first crucial challenge of the game. The first two attempts at the middle of the line resulted in little or no gain, with Jim Downey and  Alex Forte  teaming up for a stop on first and goal.  Joe Coffey followed up with a jarring tackle on second down, stopping the Sallies ball carrier on the one yard line.  However on third down, the Sallies opened a hole wide enough to allow their star tail-back #2 Sal Viscount to gain the end zone.  Picking up a bad snap on the point after attempt, the Sallies holder attempted to score around  his right end, but was stopped by Matt Bernier and #1 Tim Bemer.  So with 2:04 left in the first quarter, the Sallies lead 6 to 0.

Chris Layne took the ensuing kickoff on the five yard line and with a couple of nice moves, and a few nice blocks by the return team, brought the ball out to the 25 yard line. The Friars were not able to gain any substantial yardage on their next few attempts from scrimmage. So, on third and nine, we attempted a long pass down the middle of the field which was intercepted by the Sallies’ two way standout Sal Viscount with about 20 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

On the ensuing drive , it took the Sallies only 2:40 to drive the ball sixty yards to the end zone. Along the way, Kevin Sullivan, Alex Forte, Joe Coffey and Joe Hoban all made big tackles to make it difficult for the Sallies. However, on first and ten, from the 35 yard line, the Sallies quarterback lofted a pass to the corner of the end zone which barely made it over the outstretched hand of a Malvern defender only to be caught by the Sallies wide receiver for the second touchdown of the game. The Sallies then attempted to go for two points on the point after, but Matt Bernier and #11 Chris Moore would have no parts of it, stopping the ball carrier well short of the end zone.

The Sallies threatened one more time before the half ended, but big plays by Paul Ostick, Jim Lynch, Jim Downey, Joe Hoban and Joe Coffey contained the Sallies. The Friar offense never really got cranked up. Friar junior quarterback, Ryan Nassib, showed great poise as he stood in the pocket and absorbed big hits on several occasions as the Sallies applied constant pressure.

The half ended with the score Salesianum 12, Malvern 0, but you knew it was far from over.

As the second begin, the Malvern fans were hopeful that the halftime discussions would enable the Friars to get back into the thus far lopsided contest quickly.  The Sallies had dominated the offensive clock while puddling effectively through the muddied gridiron.

Things looked better after the Friars received the 2nd half kickoff.  A Chris Layne 22 yard end sweep and the 15 yard personal foul by Salesianum gave our Friars good field position and some renewed life.

However, after two fumbles in the 3rd quarter, the Friars fans were as gloomy as the Wilmington weather.  There were very little moments to cheer about.

After the second fumble it seemed that the game would get out of reach.  The anticipation across the field that the score would become unmanageable, like 22- 0 then 30 -0.  However, the solid Friar defense never gave way.  The Sallies did get a 3rd quarter field goal to push the real score to 15 – 0.

The Friars memories this cold and damp night could be entitled, “Moore Coffey Friars Forte.”  The linebacking crew were magnificent in keeping this game within reach.  The Sallies announcer repeatedly roared: “Tackle by #40 Joe Coffey.”  “That Friar stopped was made by #11 Chris Moore.”  “Another thwarting set back by #41 Alex Forte.”  The defensive unit were keeping the talented Friars within striking distance and in a position to win.

The 3rd score ended with the score Salesianum 15, Malvern Prep 0.

At 11:21 of the final quarter, the Friars offense still had not scored.  However, another Ryan Nassib, who stayed extremely poised despite adversity this Friday night, hit amazing Layne Train, Chris Lane for the Friars first taste of the end zone.  The coaching staff needed two on the PAT and a hand off to the “Train” Chris Layne made the score:

Salesianum 15   The Friars  8.

The Sallies got the ball back with the chance to eat up valuable time off the clock.  After 3 first downs the clock winded down to about 7 minutes left in the game.  The enduring Malvern defensive unit finally forced a Sallies punt.  That series was highlighted by spirited life by Matt Bernier, Kevin Sullivan, Kevin Umile, Alex Forte, Joe Coffey, Chris Moore, Rob Bates, Jimmy Downey, Paul Ostick, and Joey Hoban teaming up on numerous big plays.

The Malvern offense got the ball back but had to punt it away with 5:59 remaining.

Salesianum had the ball and the clock on their 40 yard line.  Big defensive plays in this series by Tim Bemer, who replaced injured junior Phillip Congialdi, in the linebacker spot.  On 3rd and long Matt Bernier sealed the Sallies short of a crucial first down and Salesianum was holding on to a thin thread and punted to the Friars with the clock running at 3 minutes 33 seconds.

On a well executed special play Alex Forte after taking a handout threw to a wide-opened Chris Layne.  The Friars frustration yet soon to be found resilience continued as the ball was not caught and the throw came from beyond the line of scrimmage for a penalty and loss of downs.  Now Ryan Nassib and pivotal Ben Bryer took the spotlight.  Ben made two of the game most important bigtime catches.

With about a minute left, the Friars 3rd down pass play was batted down by the Penn State bound Szczerba who looked toward the Sallies stands and sensed a final victory.

Then with a wet and damp setting, a 4th down and 10 yards to go against a dwindling clock, the spectacular junior quarterback, Ryan Nassib drilled a rope directly into the swift-footed Chris Lane sticky hands for a truly exhilarating catch and a touchdown that really numbed the Salesianum contingent.  Without hesitation, the decision for a Joe Buckley PAT completed a thrilling comeback and unseemingly locked up this into a tie score of:

      Malvern 15      Salesianum 15.

Awesome.

Junior Kevin Titus played the spirited sideline cheerleader to the hockey- like Malvern Prep student fans (Hint:  Quigley Field needs lights:  Friday night lights = increased student body and school spirit).

In the 10 and 10 overtime, the Sallies got the ball and after a first down five yard gain by Sal Viscount, the terrific running back score a touchdown two plays later.  The PAT was good and the Friars needed to score a touchdown and could not rely on a wishful Joe Buckley field goal.

After 4 tough plays the Friars did not score and lost this night,  22 to 15.

Although an excruciating loss, the stellar comeback provides glimpses of how good this Friars squad really is.  Instead of GAME OVER early in the third quarter, the Friars were still playing at Baynard Stadium past the 4th quarter.  Very unlikely it seemed but they did it.

Sals pull out victory in OT

Salesianum overcomes Malvern rally

Posted Saturday, October 7, 2006

WILMINGTON -- It took overtime, but now coach Bill DiNardo has a good idea about this year's Salesianum School football team.

And the verdict is that these Sals are looking "a little bit better," a year after winning the Division I state title.

Sal Viscount rushed for two touchdowns, including one in overtime, as the Sals turned back Malvern Prep (Pa.) 22-15 on Friday night at a muddy Baynard Stadium.

Viscount had 40 carries for 141 yards, and has rushed for 11 touchdowns this season.

Salesianum (5-0) is ranked first by The News Journal. Malvern (3-1) is ranked No. 10 in southeastern Pennsylvania by The Philadelphia Inquirer.

In winning its ninth straight, Sallies avenged a 48-21 loss to Malvern last season. That loss made last year's team 3-2.

"Obviously, I think we're a little bit better," DiNardo said. "After this game [last year], we were reeling."

Malvern went 10-1 in 2005 and won its 26th Inter-Ac league title. The Friars are led by Gamp Pellegrini, one of the winningest coaches in Pennsylvania history, who is in his 29th year at Malvern and 40th year overall. He has 254 wins.

"I thought our kids came out with an edge, and we had to," DiNardo said. "This is a tremendous team. I was absolutely thrilled with the way we played for 3 1/2 quarters, and I'm so proud that after we let things get away from us, we came out in overtime and we put the ball in the end zone."

The Sals led 15-0 after Viscount's 1-yard TD run in the first quarter, Will Salus' 35-yard TD pass to a leaping Patrick Goldring in the second quarter, and Ross Sylvester's 28-yard field goal in the third quarter.

With 11:21 left in regulation, Malvern's Ryan Nassib tossed a 33-yard touchdown pass to running back Chris Layne on fourth down. Layne also ran in a two-point conversion to make it 15-8. Nassib hit Layne for an 18-yard touchdown with 33 seconds left, and Joe Buckley's PAT tied it 15-15.

Salesianum played offense first in overtime and scored in three plays, all Viscount runs. Then, the Sals' Michael Shaw sacked Nassib for a 6-yard loss, and on fourth down, Nassib rolled out right and was tackled by Andrew Szczerba for a 15-yard loss to end the game.

"My eyes got wide and I got a little bit nervous, but I told myself I have to make this play," Szczerba said.

Friars fall in OT

ADAM C. WARNER , Staff Writer

WILMINGTON, Del. -- It took more than three quarters of play Friday night for Malvern Prep to awaken from a state of sedation.

But even after the Friars staged an electrifying comeback to force overtime, Salesianum made the game’s final statement, defeating Malvern, 22-15, in a thrilling nonleague football game at Baynard Stadium.

In the first half, we came out timid," said Malvern running back-defensive back Chris Layne, a junior who racked up 135 total yards and two touchdowns. "It was our first night game and we didn’t know what to expect. In our games before, we blew teams out, and tonight, we ran into a pretty good team."

For the first three quarters, Malvern (3-1) appeared nothing like the undefeated team that entered Baynard, compiling an anemic 86 yards of total offense and turning the ball over three times.

Trailing 15-0 early in the fourth quarter, the Friars, however, finally found pay dirt on a gutsy fourth-and-10 call at the Salesianum 33.

Junior quarterback Ryan Nassib took the snap and rolled right on an option play before finding Layne wide open down the right sideline for a touchdown pass. Layne’s rushing conversion on the next play cut the Salesianum lead to 15-8 with 11 minutes, 21 seconds remaining and immediately shifted the game’s momentum.

After a Sales’ punt, the Friars conducted a near-perfect two-minute drill to set themselves up with a first down at the 19. With an practical carbon copy, Nassib found Layne again down the right sideline, this time for a 19-yard touchdown connection. Joe Buckley’s extra point tied the score at 15, sending the game into overtime and the Malvern sideline into a frenzy.

"The comeback was pretty sweet. We gave it our all," Layne said. "There were a couple of key fourth-down plays. It wasn’t just a one-man show. It was a total team effort in the comeback."

In the overtime session, Salesianum (5-0), the 2005 Delaware Division I state champion, quickly found the end zone on a 1-yard scamper by Salvatore Viscount, his second touchdown of the night.

Trailing 22-15 and needing a touchdown to stay alive, the Friars couldn’t find the equalizer thanks to intense pressure from the Salesianum defensive front.

Forced into a fourth-and-long situation after a sack, Nassib had his final stab negated when a host of Sals’ defenders wrestled the quarterback to the ground.

"Since we didn’t have a timeout, I figured we would tie it up and go for the 10 and 10," Malvern head coach Gamp Pellegrini said of the decision to try and force overtime. "I thought we had the momentum going there at the end, but they just kept pounding it in for the touchdown. I think we have a good football team. But if Salesianum plays like they did against us for the rest of the year, I don’t know if anyone will beat them."

Non-league Football: Sallies get last chant against Malvern

By: John DiCandilo

WILMINGTON - It began in the third quarter. The chant. It started slowly, growing into a reverberating crescendo. It was insulting. It stung the immense pride of the Malvern Prep football fans. Worst of all, they had to sit there and take it.

Across the way at Wilmington's mud-encrusted Baynard Stadium, the Salesianum student body began the taunt: "We can't hear you." Ouch!! It was loud and proud from that side of the stadium; it was a mournful silence behind the Malvern bench.

While the score was only 12-0 at the time, it appeared the Sallies had the game in lockdown mode. They remembered the beatdown they suffered at the hands of the Friars last year. They wanted Malvern scalps. The more, the better.

Yet, for all of the Sallies' dominance, Malvern was still within spitting distance. It grew slowly out of a pass-interference call on the penultimate play of the third quarter. The fourth quarter was an explosion of Friar heart and talent. When Chris Layne crossed the goal line on an 18-yard touchdown pass with 26 seconds remaining in the game, the score was tied at 15.

Here came the equally stinging rebuttal from the Malvern sidelines: "We can't hear you."

The momentum reversal didn't last long. The Sallies took it in overtime, 22-15.

It was a night when Malvern couldn't pass protect against linebacker Geoff Vanover or defensive end Andrew Szczerba or run the ball. It was a night when Malvern fumbled away the ball twice inside the Salesianum 40 in the third quarter. It was a night when Malvern couldn't stop the Sallies on important third- and fourth-down situations.

"We didn't do it, and the Sallies were a large part in doing that," said Malvern coach Gamp Pellegrini. "We tied against a good football team, but we came up a little bit short. I think the field conditions were more conducive to the Sallies' type of ball than our type of ball. They're stronger up front."

The Sallies built up the 12-0 behind Sal Viscount's 1-yard run with 2:04 left in the first quarter, to finish a 13-play, 60-yard drive, and a 35-yard touchdown pass to Pat Goldring, who outleaped Joe Hoban.

"Joe is our best defensive back," said Pellegrini. "He was in perfect position and their kid made a perfect play. Out of 10 times, Hoban intercepts it five times and knocks it down five times."

At the time, with 40 seconds to play in the third quarter, Ross Sylvester's 28-yard field goal, for a 15-0 lead, didn't seem so important. As it turned out, it saved the Sallies' bacon.

The comeback started on fourth-and-10 at the Salesianum 33. Ryan Nassib floated a TD pass to Layne with 11:21 left in the game. Layne also scored the two-point conversion.

Malvern started from its own 16 with 2:37 showing in the game to score the tying touchdown. A boot pass to Ben Bryer accounted for 24 yards. Nassib followed that with a 36-yard completion to Layne. Another boot pass to Layne put six up on the board.

In overtime, the Sallies went the 10 yards in three Viscount carries, the last from the 1. For Malvern, Nassib was sacked twice, by Mike Shaw and the game-ending play by Szczerba.

"In the second half, we found what we're all about," said Malvern two-way lineman Paul Ostick. "I mean, give all the credit to Salesianum. They're a great team, they have great players, and they have great coaching. When we spread things out offensively, they brought their outside linebacker from the opposite side. We couldn't pick it up at first.

"The first half was atrocious. We fumbled the ball. We committed mistakes. But give credit to Salesianum. They flat-out beat us. But we didn't doubt ourselves at any time. What we'll take away with us from this game is the way we played in the second half. We have to realize we can't just show up and think we'll beat people."

Avoiding "We can't hear you" should be enough incentive.
